Momma's Jewish Chicken Soup a.k.a. Jewish Penicillin

School is in full swing.

Fall and Winter are just around the corner.

This is the time of year when sickness wants to lurk on every doorstep.

Well, I have the PERFECT RECIPE to feed your family, build your immune system and help your body heal during sickness.  This is a traditional Jewish Soup I researched until I found just the right ingredients that would give it a rich, bold flavor and make it super healthy!  It takes time and patience, but is well worth it.

Jewish women call it Jewish Penicillin because of the amazing health benefits of this natural remedy for things that ail you. The benefits of Chicken Soup are numerous.  Including:

  • reducing inflammation in stuffy noses*
  • the chicken contains cysteine amino acids to thin mucous, breaking up congested chests and noses
  • inhibiting white blood cells that cause inflammation
  • the onions contain quercetin, a powerful antioxidant, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory
  • the carrots add beta-carotene which the body takes that beta-carotene and converts it to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps prevent and fight off infections by enhancing the actions of white blood cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses.
  • healthy eyes*
  • fat reduction - belly fat in particular*
  • building muscles*
*source livestrong.com

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BROTH:
  • 1 whole Chicken *
  • 10 cloves Garlic [**Note] this is approximately an entire bunch - sometimes I add more depending on the size of the cloves]
  • 1 whole Onion
  • 1 whole Turnip
  • 2 whole Parsnips
  • 2 whole carrots
  • 2 teaspoons Celtic Sea Salt and/or Herbamare
  • 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1 Tablespoon of ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Water, To Cover
  • other veggies I add for flavor can be potato, leeks, red onion
  • Optional: 1 egg shell [the vinegar wil help to draw out the calcium in the shell]
*Note: Farm-raised, free-range chickens give the best results.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SOUP:

  • 2 whole Carrots
  • 2 stalks Celery
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1-2 cup Brown Rice Or Noodles, Cooked
  • Meat from chicken, shredded

For your broth:

Give vegetables a good washing. If you use a leek, cut it before cleaning to remove all of the dirt.

Cut your vegetables in 1/2 or 1/4.  You can leave the skin on all, including the cloves of garlic.  They contain nutrients as well. Sometimes I add leftover egg shells for the magnesium. Waste not, want not.

Place the whole chicken [or cut into pieces] in a LARGE stock pot or crockpot. Add vegetables. Pour water into the pot until chicken and vegetables are covered. Add coconut oil and ACV.

Bring to a boil, then turn your heat down to a simmerl. Be gentle! Simmer gently for at 10 to 12 hours. Remove any foam that forms on the surface. You will have to add more water as you cook.  A long cook time draws out all of the good nutrients from the chicken meat, marrow of the bones and vegetables.  The longer you cook your broth the richer it will become, as well as richer in color. We call it Liquid Gold in our home.

When cooking time is done,  let it cool.  Then, remove chicken and vegetables and strain your broth. Take the chicken off the bone and save for your soup.  Your vegetables lost their flavor in the long cooking process. You can strain and squeeze as much broth as you can get out of them before discarding. Your broth is done!

For your soup:
Peel and slice the carrots. Chop the celery. Cook rice or noodles. Save for later.

When broth is strained add the carrots, celery, and a poultry seasoning to your broth. Cook until carrots are tender. Add shredded chicken and rice or noodles. Heat through.
Total soup time: 30 minutes.

Once you have refrigerated your soup you will want to skim some of the fat off, to your liking.

That’s it!

Some other ways I enjoy this broth/soup is:

Plain, great just on it's own when tummy's are sensitive

Greek it up!  Add the juice of 1/2 a lemon to your bowl to add delicious flavor and even more cleansing, health.

Veggie goodness.  I add it to a bowl full of left over vegetables to make a delicious vegetable chicken soup.

Enjoy it! Share it! Spread the love!

STRETCH :: Five Minute Friday's

I'm writing in 5 flat.  5 Minutes.
Unhendered.  With abandon.  From my heart.

Five Minute Friday

Lisa-Jo Baker over at tales from a Gypsy Mama is inspiring us to write:

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

Stretch…

He's doing it again.  I'm being STRETCHed.  It's so good and scary and precious all wrapped into one.

16 years ago, the Lord set my feet running on the ground of prayer ministry.  Things moved so fast I almost could not keep up emotionally.  It was such a time of blessing, growing, understanding and filling.  Every bit of me was STRETCHed beyond what I thought I was capable of handling.  Oh, how sweet were the times of worship, learning to pray, learning to pray for others.  How painfully difficult were the lessons of the Real World as I was growing. STRETCHing my spiritual muscles.

How immature I was.  There were times of misunderstanding, mistakes - horrible mistakes - and brokenness.  I was discovering who I was and who I was not.  I allowed others to manipulate me in a way that I thought was serving, out of the goodness of my heart of giving.  In the end I was being misused. How my heart was STRETCHed in hurt.

The valley was almost welcomed.  The desert time was long proceeding that time of STRETCHing.  In that dry time, my prayer life dried up.  I stopped my ministry of intercession, except for times I can only count on one hand.

Selah.....

Easter 2011.  The Rivers began to flow again.  Oh, Praise the Lord, the rivers of water have begun to flow again.  Again, I am being STRETCHed.  Reaching out to others when all I want to do is hide.  Trusting.  Believing. "Oh, how I Do Not want to be hurt again - Not be exposed to those mistakes I will make." God knows.  He knows my heart.  Ministry.  Intercession.  I'm here again.  STRETCH.

I have come full circle since that time 16 years ago.  As I surrendered in worship at church this morning I could see how the Lord is restoring something in me that I was called to do.  I see the STRETCHing of my faith to believe as I have never believed before.  I am seeing where He showed me wondrous things in my youth and am just now beginning to live in those things He called me to.  How time STRETCHes so long.  All I have to do is allow the STRETCHing and developing of my faith .

CONNECT::

This summer has been an amazing journey of CONNECTing.

Mother-Daughter trip::  When my mom and I travel together, it always bring a renewed CONNECTion and understanding with one another.  Our drive for 8 hours to CONNECT with my aunt, her sister, birthed a greater love-bond between three women at 3 different stages of life.  Seeds were planted.

"Doing school all summer" plans were providentially changed to doing "nothing but fun all summer". Life-giving plans brought a CONNECTing spirit that was unsurpassed.  Birthdays, Summer camps, Kids Faith Conference, Youth Faith Conference, brought connection between my children in ways I could have never imagined.  Those CONNECTions brought deeper connections with a Mighty Lord and Holy Spirit, new friends in faith and a courage that did not exist before.

I CONNECTed with friends.  Long-time friend.  Homeschool friend.  Aunt-Mentor-Sister friend. Family, church family, again. CONNECT was the banner over me. And I am healed and restored because of it.  CONNECT was the banner over my marriage as dates were had and my husband and I were blessed to find peace and restoration with one another.

CONNECT is what I yearn to do more and more every day with a Father, Abba [daddy] in a deeper, more intimate way.  CONNECT with Jesus, the One and Only.  Again, I am healed, restored and made whole in His presence.

CONNECT brings thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving brings hope.  Hope brings Faith.  Faith makes me whole.

And he said to her,
“Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”

Humility & Prayer, Our Only Remedy

Thank you to my cousin, Laney, for sharing this on Facebook yesterday.  How true it is.  One only has to watch the news for 5 minutes to see the dark, unsettling events occurring just in our nation alone.  We have forgotten by whose hand we became this great country, turning away from the Lord whose sovereign hand brought us through so many tribulations. She made a very important point:

"The last sentence is key...we can post and complain all we want about the current state we are in...but humble repentance and prayer is the only remedy!"

My response, Amen.  The Lord has called us to put our trust in Him alone, to...

"... not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Romans 12:21

Our humility honors the Lord.

"The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged."
Psalm 69:32

We have nothing to worry about.  The world professes 'doom and gloom' but our trust in the Lord brings deliverance.

"For the LORD delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory." Psalm 149:4

The promises of the Lord are never ending.  His covenants are forever!

The LORD says, "I will rescue those who love me.  I will protect those who trust in my name. Psalm 91:3-4

Put your trust in the Lord, doing good.  That is when you will see the hand of the Lord moving in mighty ways.

Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Psalm 37:3

Pray without ceasing.  Cover our nation and our leaders in prayer and watch the Lord move.

Destination Disney - Think Pink!

I am joining the fun with Heidi at HEIDI'S HEAD and her Disney meme DESTINATION DISNEY to share some of my favorite's from Disney in PINK!

Heidi says, "I’m not going to give any direction for these posts except to say USE YOUR CREATIVITY!  You have free reign here – I only ask that your posts are Disney related in some way.  So, even if you’ve never been to a Disney park – you can play along!  Share a picture!"

This was an easy one for me because my daughter LOVE's Pink!  So here goes, Disney Pink

Disney's Kingdom Keepers Quest is for the fan's of the "Kingdom Keepers" series written by Ridley Pearson.

The books follow characters throughout the parks of Disney after dark, in their fight of good against evil.  Our boys have loved this series.  We were blessed to be a part of Disney Homeschool Days in January 2012 and meet Ridley Pearson, hear him speak on what inspired him to become a writer and how to be a great writer.  Then we took the Quest.  Your family is given a book to follow the clue, break the code and find the secrets throughout the entire park.  It was really fun!  It helped us see parts of the Magic Kingdom that we have never noticed before.

You can find out more about the Kingdom Keepers Quest HERE from the Disney Youth Education programs.

This was the silliness waiting for me when I came out of Pooh's Shop at the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.  I couldn't resist snapping a picture.  And, as always, my girl, surrounded by her Protective detail [a.k.a. Big Daddy and brother's] is shining in her Pink Princess shirt.  This shirt has been on 6 trips to Disney.  I bought it when she was probably 2 years old, a little large for her, so that she could where it for a while.  Who knew?

Pink cheeks on a hot Mays day at Disney's Magic Kingdom, cooling off on the Transit Authority

My Pink Princess meeting Princess Mulan

Italy- Epcot - Pink bricks and beautiful pink flowers

Meeting Heidi for the first time in Downtown Disney.  It wasn't long. It was VERY hot [shine alert] But, we made up for it the second time around over tea and 'crumpets'.  So looking forward to doing it again in the future.

Last, but certainly not least, my Pink Princess getting the Royal Treatment at the BBB

Thank you for joining me!

Walking in the Word ~ August 6 2012

We are walking in the Word again today.  So, remember...

Get up

Put on your walking shoes

Go for a walk

&

Take the Word with you

I woke early this morning.  Today our church begins our mid-year 21 days of prayer for the new school year and for the direction of the Lord in our lives.  So, I got up and began.

I was inspired by our Pastor's message this weekend.  Through his message on TEACH US TO PRAY Part 1, he spoke on the difference between our prayers being prayers of Rescue or Relationship.  Are my prayers only in moments of desperation when I need to be rescued.  Or, are my prayers, daily time spent in the Presence of the Lord, developing a relationship with Him.

Some of the things he pointed out about what is missing when we aren't developing a daily relationship with our Lord is we begin to believe things that are not true.  For example, we feel shame, beating ourselves up for not making time for Him, when we feel Him tugging at our hearts, draw us nearer to Him.  Or we feel as though we don't know what to say.  You know that feeling.  You have heard someone else pray and think, "I can never pray like that.  Surely, God can't hear me if I don't pray a certain way."

Pastor Lane went on to share that when we do take time to give the Lord first place in our lives, not just when we need Him, but when He calls, it is pleasing to Him.  So much like our relationships with our children.  When your child wants to spend time with you and wants to bless you with sweet words of love, it develops such a sweetness, in that moment with your child.

To develop our hearts for Him, we begin our time with Him in Worship.  We worship Him in spirit and truth.  Everything we are, everything we think, every breath, surrendering to Him.  We forget all and focusing only on Him.

It is here we fully surrender.  "Not what I want, but what You want, Lord."

Then we pray with confidence!  Hebrews 4:15-16 says, "For WE DO NOT HAVE a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but WE HAVE ON WHO has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet he did not sin.  Let us then APPROACH GOD'S THRONE OF GRACE WITH CONFIDENCE so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. [emphasis mine]

Pray with Confidence!  Not because of how great I am, but BECAUSE OF HOW GREAT JESUS IS!!!.

So today's scripture, 1 John 3:22,  is perfect for this last step in prayer.  Make it personal not formal.  "Whatever you ask..."  Don't be shy.  He knows. He wants you to speak it, out loud, and tell Him like you would tell your best friend, everything that is on your heart and what you need or the need of others.  He has the perfect answer.  This may be the hard part.  Now, you remember your surrender to His perfect will.  Knowing that your prayers will be answered, but that His answer will be even better than you can think or imagine.

Trust in Him today.  Worship Him.  Surrender your heart to Him.  Pray with confidence in a personal way.

I hope your prayer journey, whether you have been praying for years or new to the faith, is blessing beyond measure.  Never give up, even when you think your prayers are not being answered.  They ARE!  Trust.

Take the Word with you wherever you go today.  I know it will bless and encourage you.

From My Heart to Yours,
Mindy B
