embracing life and letting God

George Washington Carver: His Life and His Work - TOS Review

"I like to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting system through which God speaks to us every hour. If we will only tune Him in." -George W. Carver

Being a Southern girl who lives in the State of Alabama and loves a good batch of boiled peanuts on occasion, I have learned over the years some of the values of the peanut.  I studied a bit of the life of George Washington Carver as a child in elementary school.  Sadly, I was never given the opportunity to take a field trip to the Tuskegee Institute to view Mr. Carvers Museum and learn who he really was. [Field Trip!!!!]

So, today I am bringing to you, from Marshall Publishing, a wonderful documentary to add to your Living History library.  This 30 minute Documentary DVD on the life and works of George Washington Carver, was filmed at the George W. Carver Museum at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama.  You are taken into Mr. Carver's world and given an up-close and personal look in to of his life and his passion, God's Creation.

  • Mr. Carver was born into slavery
  • Kidnapped by bushwhackers and later recovered by a Union Solider, never saw his mother again
  • He was the first black man accepted into Iowa State, earned his B. S. degree in 1894 and thereafter was made a member of the faculty.
  • Through his love for all of God's creation and science he explored and discovered over 300 uses for the peanut and over 100 uses for the sweet potato.

"Measure me not by the heights to which I have climbed, but the depth from which I have come." -George W. Carver

His favorite spot was the woods where he would talk to Mr. Creator.  The Lord used him to overflow with knowledge of the peanut. He changed the face of farming in the South through his diligence and willingness to listen to God to inspire him in his pursuit of scientific solutions to improving farmers lives.  He shared his wealth of knowledge through his hands-on school where farmers could come and learn all the different techniques he discovered.  He taught them what plants would replenish the land to help their cotton crops flourish. And when they couldn't come to him he took his schooling to them.

One thing my son found interesting/clever was that Mr. Carver was not named with a middle name.  While in Minneapolis, Kansas completing his High School degree there was another young man named George Carver. He added a W. to his name so they wold not become mixed up.  When a man questioned him one day about the meaning of his middle name, the man said, does it stand for Washington.  Mr. Carver smiled and answered, "Why not?"

Though some of the images appear a bit outdated, they are beautiful all together and the music draws you in as the narrator delivers with ease the story of Mr. Carver. I love history when it is presented in such an easy to understand and delightful to watch format.  This documentary is such a wonderful way  to learn so much more than I could share here or ever knew of him in elementary school. It think you will really enjoy sharing this with your children.

October Baby - Limited Release October 28

October Baby filmed right here in Alabama is opening on October 28 in limited release. A film written, directed and produced by the Erwin Brother's, graduates of our homeschool Hope Christian School and Alabama natives, are showing a Special Limited Release in Alabama & Mississippi. I urge all who can to support this pro-life movie. You can find theaters showing here: http://www.octoberbabymovie.net/theaters
"OCTOBER BABY is a coming of age story of Hannah, a beautiful 19 year old college freshman. In spite of her energetic (if somewhat naïve) personality, Hannah has always felt like an outsider. Something is missing. She has always carried a deep seeded sense that she has no right to exist.

When she discovers she was adopted it comes as a shock, but Hannah's world is rocked even more when she learns why she was never told before – because she was the survivor of a failed abortion. Desperate for answers, she embarks on a road trip with some friends (including her oldest and closest friend Jason) to find her biological mother. In the process she unexpectedly discovers hope, love and forgiveness.

This uplifting and beautiful film may change the way you look at the world, your loved ones ... and life."

Scruble Cube Fun! ~ TOS Review

Today The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew and I bring you...

It's Scrabble!!! Umm...No.  It's a Rubix Cube!!!! Umm...No.  It's... It's...

3D Word Game

Ages 8+  Players 1-4
Your package comes with 96 Letter Cube,  Score pad and Sand Timer

"If you can spell you can play....SCRUBLE Cube!

What if you took some of the known playing patterns of some of the most popular word games and puzzles in history and combined them in a brand new, unique format to create the World’s Greatest 3-D Word Game?Well, you’d have the “SCRUBLE Cube™ a patent pending game with over 7.4 x 1045(that’s 7,401 septillion)possible configurations that anyone who can spell can play. And all in a portable format that can be played anywhere- anytime The SCRUBLE Cube™ is a word game and a puzzle- on steroids!"

When our cool box arrived we immediately tore into the box and were ready to play.  When you get yours be sure to note that the instruction are not visible right away.  We had to look for ours a bit.  You must look between the box and the inner shiny lining.  It was time to play!

In SCRUBLE Cube™, players form words on the cube using letter pegs of
different values. The letter pegs rotate to allow for easier pattern recognition.
In SCRUBLE Cube, words can begin and end anywhere on the cube and
are formed in a single line. Words may be formed around the cube surface
using adjacent letters so that more than one cube surface is part of the word
formed. The SCRUBLE Cube game contains premium pegs for added word
and letter point scoring. Diagonal words are not permitted.
It took us a little while to figure out the instructions.  But, once we got the general idea we were off.  SCRUBLE Cube really is a fun little game that you can take anywhere.  Your object is to spell words, much like scrabble, to earn points, with the ability to earn 2X Word Score and 3X Letter Score.  My children, of course, were spelling words right away.  I had a little more of a time trying to see the words at first.  I enjoy a good challenge here and there!  You have to really think about the positioning and where you want your tiles/pegs to move.  It's important to play with the Cube and see where the letters are positioned in relation to the others.  This is where the logical thinking skills kick in.  It is a wonderful way to get the brain firing on all cylinders, challenge your thinking, and think outside of the box to get longer and longer words.

The way that we have used it, mostly, is we leave it where the boys can pick it up whenever they are ready to play. They study the cube for a moment to try and see a word pattern and then make a word as fast as they can, then they tally up their score.  It's a great way to challenge themselves to get better every time.

Scruble Cube offers FREE Downloadables on their Educators page: Lesson Plans and Activities .  Their lessons enhance math, language, logic, spelling and/or science.  My favorite, right off the bat, was the "Periodic Table Scruble Fun".  The object of the game is the teacher calls out the element and the student finds the elements Symbol on the cube.  Fun!

Now, I must say that before we received our package, a couple of the mom's that had already received their product said that when a little one got a hold of the cube or they dropped the cube it broke into pieces.  So we were sure to take extra care not to be rough with it.  The instructions also state that if the cube sticks, and it does, don't force it, just turn another direction or line up the pegs more.

For those who like crosswords, Scrabble, word challenge games you will thoroughly enjoy the Scruble Cube.

You can purchase your own Scruble Cube for $24.95 HERE.  It is also available at Barnes and Noble and Toys 'R Us.
