Buckets-O-Fun

"Buckets-O-Fun has been around for about 4 years, providing fun and unique products for the event needs of churches, schools, corporations and many other groups.  We are excited to be going in a new direction with science projects for all ages.  We are teaming up with a veteran science teacher to bring affordable, easy to use projects for the classroom and at home."
-(Excerpt of letter from Sheri Elmont, President of Buckets-O-Fun)

We received samples of some really FUN Yucky Experiments.  This was right up our alley.  Messy, Sticky, Messy, and super Cool.

Chunky Yuck (we received a 1 tablespoon sample)
Dry in the package the white polymers look like rock salt.Once water is added the clear polymers look like delicious crushed ice.  Suggested amounts of water were 8 cups we added one additional to see how it would react.  It just keeps growing.
Bucket's suggestion: "It's great for wrestling and games where items are hidden in it...Use Yuck tints and add some color.  Allow 24 hours for best hydration."

Princess 3:  I like the 'crunchy' (transliteration:  chunky)

Saucy Yuck (we received a 1 tablespoon sample)
This polymer begins as a white powder.  Once you add the water it swells immediately to a crumbly, snow like consistency.  After adding approximately  6 cups it looks just like white applesauce.
Bucket's suggests:  "Try it on a Slip-n-Slide or put a pinch in a water balloon."

Snowy Yuck (we received a 1 tablespoon sample)
Dry, Snowy looks and feels like sugar.  Wet it slowly turns into a cool, wet, snowy consistency.  When squeezed it makes a sound like squishing bubbles in your hand.  Snowy has a sparkle like real frozen crystals.  It was the favorite of Eagle 1 and Princess 3.  Princess couldn't resist the feel.  She loves to cook so this just added to the imagination of play.

Sticky Yuck (we received a 1 tablespoon sample)
Sticky is best described on the package as "Snot".  (Sorry Mom, I know.)  Fact is fact.  Dry, Sticky is white and has a fine grainy feel.  Once hydrated the consistency is immediately goo.  It takes only about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water.  Significantly less than the others.  After 2 to 3 hours "Sticky" is an understatement.  This was Rhino 1's favorite.  He couldn't stop playing with it.

Rhino 2: My favorite's the 'goo', the sticky. It looks like you have webbed fingers. It's also cold and won't let go.

Did I mention Messy?  It is necessary to inform you that this "Yuck" is everything it's name denotes.  The sticky was my (as a mom who had to do most of the cleaning) least favorite.  It was quite difficult getting it to release from the skin.  Not being able to rinse hands in the sink until MOST of the Yuck was removed made it even more of a challenge.  Yuck also requires some minor safety measures. You can find safety guidelines here.
Read, In Bold "Do Not let product go down drains.
As I said, this made cleaning up a tad difficult and we had to come up with some really creative ideas.

All that said, it still had been a lot of  F U N!

Eagle 1 and Rhino 2 recorded their observations on home-made science journal pages. They recorded their Before, During and After inspections stating the color, texture, shape and smell.  They were amazed at the dramatic change from start to finish.

Throughout our days worth of observations there were lots of 'ooo's' and 'aaah's' and 'look at this', 'look what this does'.  I 'instructed' them to take a break at one point and go outside and on the way out the 'Yuck' was too distracting and they stood playing in the goo even longer.

The product comes in three sizes:  1 pound, 5 pounds, and 50 pounds.  The one pound Yuck produces anywhere from 25 to 60 gallons of polymer, depending on which product you choose (i.e. Sticky, Chunky, Saucy, or Snowy).   The 1 pound bag runs $16 to $20 where as the 5 pound and 50 pound bags are much more pricey but great for large school or youth groups.  Ms. Elmont inlcuded in our review packet a great list of games to play with the Yuck.  I can see this providing hours of fun for a birthday party, Troop fun day, youth group or school Play-day event.

Buckets-O-Fun really is FUN and educational.  You can find these and more at www.buckets-o-fun.com/3yucks.html.  They have even included You-Tube videos of the process.  There is Yuck Accessories, Inflatable Fun, and more outdoor activity Fun.  Check out Buckets-O-Fun

Praying the Word of God

For years our family has prayed Psalm 91 for protection and safety over our daily lives. We have waned recently in our busy lives from this practice. So while in devotions this week the Lord reminded me that if I am going to know Him and know His word I don't need to just memorize His Word, I need to speak His word, with power. I apply scripture to my circumstance, I remember it.

Let me show you what I mean.

Prayer of Psalm 91 ( you can pray it in the first person as it is written or for your whole family replacing I with We - my with our)

HE WHO dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty Whose power no foe can withstand.
I [we] will say of the Lord, He is my [our] Refuge and my [our] Fortress, my [our] God; on Him I [we] lean and rely, and in Him I [we]confidently trust!
For then He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.
Then He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler.

And so on until the end of Psalm 91.

As I continue to do daily devotions he has encouraged me to pray the Book of Ephesians in this same manner. I am seeing just who He really is, more and more each day. He truly is my deliverer, my fortress, my shield, my peace, my rest.

My attitude is changing. Slowly, but it is changing.  The more I read and speak the Word with power I know He has a better plan than I can ever dream up. I may take two steps forward and one step back, but I am still moving forward.

Peace in the Home

I am the Light of the world.
He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark,
but will have the Light which is Life.-John 8:12

During the Making Your Home a Haven Fall Challenge the first week we are lighting candles everyday.

"Each time the candle catches your eye, say a prayer for peace in your home."

Courtney, over at Women Living Well asked us on Facebook what scent we chose for our candles.  So here is the one I chose.  I found two actually, on sale (Yay!) at Homegoods.  The one I am using is the Yankee Candles "World Journey's".  I am in heaven.  The scent above is Pacific Coconut.  Not only did tropical scenes and the pure white candle draw me in, but the description sealed the deal: "Pure coconut extract from the Philippines: The perfect South Pacific vacation...soak up the tropical Philippine sun at beautiful White Beach..."  Ahhhh.

Sadly when I ventured on-line to find more of these wonderful candles I found they apparently are discontinued.  I am going to make a bee-line for Homegoods to buy the few they had left.  In the mean time I found these as a replacement if you are interested.

Many Blessings and may Christ be the Light and Life of your home.

Sunday's Sense and Sensibility: Walk by Faith

One of my favorite scriptures is 2 Corinthians 5:7 Walk by faith, not by sight." When I first heard someone minister on this Word I was challenged to stop looking at my circumstances - sickness, family disagreements, rebellion in a child - and focus on God. It's so hard to not focus on what is right in front of you. Our lives seems to be compounded with 'stuff' that just won't let up.

When I re-read this scripture today one thing stood out. WALK by faith. WALK. Action, doing something active. You hear so many Christians say "well the Lord is in control there is nothing I can do about ________." When the Lord said WALK by faith and LIVE by faith (Hebrews 10:38) that didn't mean we lay down and give up. We were not created to be lazy in body or faith.

Ephesians 6 makes this very clear "Therefore PUT ON God's complete armor, that you may be able to RESIST and STAND your ground on the evil day of danger, and having DONE all the crisis demands, to STAND firmly in your place. STAND...LIFT UP over all the covering shield of saving FAITH, upon which you can quench all the flaming missile's of the wicked one...PRAY AT ALL TIMES..."

In the old testament He called for all to read, meditate, memorize, live by, speak, bind to, teach to our children, place the Word of God on our doorpost for all to see.

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord].
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might.
And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then]
You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.
And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes.
And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Walking by faith means staying in the Word; walking in the the commands of the Lord; speaking the promises of the Lord instead of what is going on right in front of our eyes.

When sickness tries to manifest speak the Truths of the Bible: "...for I am the Lord who heals you." Exodus15:26  "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole." -Isaiah 53:5

When offense and unforgiveness try to overcome you: "He who covers and forgives an offense seeks love..." Proverbs 17:9

When doubt rises and we think God doesn't answer our prayers anymore remember: "The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord receives my prayer." Psalm 6:9

The answer to our every need is the Word of God. No matter what struggle, challenge or adventure is staring us in the face the Bible possesses the answer we are seeking. Speak the Word and not the circumstance! Walk by faith and not by sight.

The Peleg Chronicles: Foundlings

It's....

Review Day!!!

Honor, Courage, Adventure, Strength in the midst of weakness,
The ultimate fight between Light and Darkness

Photobucket
"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings,
that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation"
Isaiah 52:7

In August I was blessed by a man named Matthew Christian Harding who mailed me a signed copy of the book he penned called "The Chronicles of Peleg: Book One Foundlings".

[Note: He actually mailed the book to a long list of families with The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew. But I digress.]

Promptly, two things struck me - one of those "judging the book by it's cover" sort of things.  One was the name of the Publishing Company.  Zoe and Sozo.  I thought surely these were the names of his children.  But, upon further reading about the author Matthew Christian Harding, he shared that these two special words come from the Greek.

Photobucket
Zoe meaning Life

Sozo meaning Save, Deliver, Protect

Outstanding!  My curiosity was peaked even further.

Upon reading this man's testimony of faith he described a life that spoke volumes to how much these two words meant to him.  For he was a tragedy in the making when the Lord saved, delivered, and  protected him many, many times and in the end captured his heart. You can read his testimony on his blog Matthew Christian Harding.com

The next thing that stood out was the notation under the summary on the back cover of the book: "No Magic, No Evolution, No Humanism".  I liked it already.

In this fun adventure of Good and Evil in the days following the Great Flood of Noah the followers of The Most High God fight to destroy the evil that permeates the world.    Their Faith stays strong as they battle the great creatures of wickedness and fight to save those whom the Evil one has targeted for sacrifice.   The Word of God is their Shield and Buckler.  Courage, Trust, and Integrity to protect their brother's and sister's in the Lord are strong.   In the spirit of Jonathan and David, Moses and Aaron, Loyalty, Honor, Character and Trust prevail. Mr. Harding demonstrates through his characters that though they may have weaknesses they are strong as they lean on and trust in the Lord.

"All men must fight against pride.  He said men with half your skill usually fall pray to its control.  So God gave you an awkwardness of form and speech to protect you from the pride which otherwise you  surely would have succumbed...It is a gift from God."

There are Dragons, Dragon Priests, Giants, Dwarf, Rangers, and Warriors.  With occasional humor, likened  to that of "The Princess Bride" and battles of Light and Darkness and journey's of faith in the spirit of "The Lord of the Rings" this book is FULL of everything children, boys especially, crave for in a good book.  The honesty of what evil can do to man is poignant.  The characters who Love the Lord God with all of their hearts are never ashamed to share the salvation of the Lord through the Truth of the Word of God and to pray for those immersed in the Evil darkness.  The encouragement children receive for fighting the Good Fight of Faith is astounding.

"I must tell you that both the light and the dark of the this god of  yours are lies, and the path you've chosen does lead to Hell, exactly as the boy has told you.  The Most High God commands that no images be made of him so that we don't corrupt ourselves by worshiping His creation...An abomination to God it is, and He has forbidden it. Listen well my friend; you can have that bone-trembling fear taken away."

The way Mr. Harding displays to the reader that even 'good' witchcraft is evil in the eyes of God is presented without compromise.  I love this!  As a mother who has stood in the face of criticism for not allowing my children to read books promoting the 'good' and the 'bad' crafts of wizardry I am truly thankful for a book that speaks the Truth of the Heart of God to its reader.

We have really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good adventure with Biblical influences. In the back of the book, Mr. Harding ministers even further to the reader the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

From the heart of my children about 'Foundlings'
Eagle 1:  "I like the story-line.  I like that there is no evolution or witchcraft.  There is real Christianity."

Rhino 1:  "I like the hunting and adventure.  I like that it is Christian."
